Convert An Old Benchtop Drill Press To A Spindle SanderA few years ago I upgraded my drill press capability from a cheap benchtop model to a bigger floor-standing one. So, what to do with the old one?
I decided to turn it into a spindle sander. I bought an inexpensive set of sanding drums that chuck in a drill. The platform is removable, to allow the machine to be reverted back to a drill press if needed.
My humble little Ryobi drill press, given a new lease on life as a spindle sander. |
The sander platform is comprised of a scrap of MDF, and attaches to the drill press table with threaded knobs. It's easily removable in the event I might ever want to use it as a drill press again. |
I drilled a shallow hole into the platform to accommodate the sanding drum. Since the rubber drums are a bit rounded on the edges, it needs to be dropped a bit below the level of the table to ensure an even sanding profile. The table is raised until the sanding drum protrudes part way into the hole, but is not bottomed out in it. This also keeps sanding dust from clogging up below the drum. |
Works great, though it does not oscillate vertically like a regular spindle sander. When the bottom portion of the abrasive drum starts to wear out, I can invert it on the rubber drum and use the top part. |
